Two LTC plays selected for Hot Shorts

Bette Guy (L) and Lisa Walmsley (R) at Rochdale Theatre

Lismore Theatre Company is excited that two of its members have had their ten minute plays selected as finalists in The Drill Hall Theatre Company Mullumbimby’s biennial short play competition Hot Shorts, opening Friday 1 November.

Writers were invited to submit original plays, not previously performed, no longer than 10 minutes and with simple staging requirements. Eight have been selected.

Bette Guy is thrilled about having her play, The Last Party, chosen for the Hot Shorts season. Not only has she written the play but she is also directing.

‘The Last Party is a powerful short play that reveals how a couple of ex-lovers cope differently with the mistakes they have made in the past. As one character says “Life is full of if only’s”, says Bette Guy.

Lisa Walmsley says ‘I was quite startled when Tertiary was selected to be in this year’s Hot Shorts. Then I was excited, proud and very grateful that the judges had liked it’.

Tertiary is an absurdist political satire set in a local fictional university about funding, politics and climate change. Lisa says ‘It’s mostly funny, but with a sting in the tail.’ Lisa is ecstatic that Kylie Fuad is directing Tertiary and that regular LTC actors, John Taylor, Sharon Brodie, Natalie Havilah and Jenny Dowell, make up the cast.

About Hot Shorts

Four cash prizes totaling $1,500 will be awarded and a $100 prize to each play selected for performance that has been written by a high school student.

In addition to the award for the best script as selected by the Byron Writers Centre, there are three prizes ($500, $300 and $200) based on the nightly audience votes. Lismore people are encouraged to buy tickets for one of the nights and vote for our local playwrights. ‘We’d love to bring this fabulous prize home to Lismore Theatre Company’ says President Sharon Brodie ‘so come along, show your support for LTC and vote for your favourite play.’

Hot Shorts runs for six performances over the first two weekends in November. Book at www.drillhalltheatre.org.au
